EDUCATION COMMITTEE

DISSEMINATES HORTICULTURAL INFORMATION

TO BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Operating under the aegis of the Master Gardeners of Essex County and the Cooperative Extension of Rutgers University, the Education Committee provides educational outreach throughout Essex County. It adopts as its mission the dissemination of research-based horticultural information to both children and adults in the hope of developing groups of individuals skilled in the techniques which will help us preserve our natural resources through good gardening practices.

By designing and implementing both programs and individualized activities, the Education Committee wishes:

to promote an understanding of the integral relationship between the individual and his/her environment as we work to protect that environment and preserve our natural resources;

to introduce the individual to horticulture as both art and science;

to share information with the public that will lead to an understanding of currently approved horticultural theories and practices;

to develop and implement programs which acquaint the individual with the skills inherent in good horticultural practices;

to support educational programs designed to meet state and/or national standards; and

to awaken the individual to the lifelong pleasures and rewards of horticulture.

The Master Gardeners of Essex County has established the Education Committee, which serves both youth and adults.

Through its work in schools,

 

 

 

 
with groups and institutions

 

 

 

 

 and in conjunction with the County's Environmental programs,

 

 

 

 

 

 

education volunteers provide a variety of services to the residents of the county which allow them access to the latest in horticultural and environmental information. Outreach activities include training in horticultural best practices, direction in developing skills in home gardening, support for educational programs and guidance in developing educational programs. Master Gardeners work behind the scenes to develop curriculum and plan activities, present classroom programs and engage in hands-on activities. Work extends from pre-school to adult school.
