Become a Master Gardener

One of the major activities of the Master Gardener program is conducting training programs that lead to certification as a Master Gardener. Since the 1980s, more than 273 Essex residents have received training and certification by the MGEC in soil science, flower and plant growing, pest control, composting and other environmental topics.

New Jersey Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who assist Rutgers Cooperative Extension in its mission to deliver horticulture programs and information to the general public. Anyone with an interest in gardening and a commitment to volunteer service can become a Master Gardener. No previous education or training in horticulture is required.

Participants must complete 70 hours training course and field seminars with 90% attendance and successfully pass a final examination. Upon completion of their training, all participants must take part in a community service project for a minimum of 100 total hours in Essex County; attend a Helpline Training class; and be successfully mentored through 6 hour of the Helpline Training program.
